Tailor-made interior designs

John is renowned for his unique and colourful designs and his natural flair, eye for colour and meticulous attention to detail that have become his trademark. His belief from day one has always been and will always be, that if you look after each and every client exceedingly well, the rest will follow.

John’s career and business success

John’s illustrious career in the interior design business now spans a number of decades and far from diminishing, his passion for interior design and decorating continues to grow. He now employs nine staff, including six interior designers.

John credits the success of his business to being different from conventional designers. John’s radical designs are the sort people love or hate because of his tailor-made approach to creating something unique for each client. John’s philosophy is to make a house into a home by creating a completed look that his clients can live with immediately, without having to make any changes.

How it all began

John Croft’s life began in the country, born-and-bred in Ayr North Queensland and moved to Brisbane in his late teens.

When he bought his first house at the age of 19, he discovered his latent creative gift for decorating. This spurred him on to study interior design at night school, while he worked full time during the day to support himself and his mortgage.

Even though John is slightly dyslexic and found his interior design course studies very demanding, he still excelled and achieved top marks in his new-found vocation.

After securing a series of jobs with a curtain store and interior designers, his journey then took him to setting up John Croft Design from his home in Indooroopilly in 1980.

Despite the 1980s stock market collapse, John leased a small shop in Toowong in 1981. Although starting out was a struggle, John’s interior design skill and reputation spread and his business grew.

John’s success lead him to purchase larger premises in 1987 in Spring Hill, near Brisbane’s CBD, which was double the size of his previous shop.

By 1999, John’s business again outgrew his premises, so John purchased and totally refurbished a much larger building in Fortitude Valley where his office is today.

John Croft is a member of the Design Institute of Australia and has previously held the Queensland Convenor and Treasurer positions for the Society of Interior Designers of Australia.
